Prop. 8 Aftermath: No-On-8 Campaign Comes To Its Senses…We Think

As staunch No-On-8ers, we here at Johnny California are confused. As we’ve been said before the election, we were unhappy with the No-On-8s campaign against the Mormon church and the phony outrage about all the money spent. After the election, we discussed how No On 8′s failure to make inroads into religious groups of all denominations and ethnic backgrounds was one of the reasons the campaign failed. Yesterday’, we talked about how the protest at the Los Angeles Mormon Temple was more of the same losing strategy.
Today, it seems No-On-8 leadership finally came to their senses. We just received an email from them, which is also posted on their website:
We achieve nothing if we isolate the people who did not stand with us in this fight. We only further divide our state if we attempt to blame people of faith, African American voters, rural communities and others for this loss. We know people of all faiths, races and backgrounds stand with us in our fight to end discrimination, and will continue to do so. Now more than ever it is critical that we work together and respect our differences that make us a diverse and unique society. Only with that understanding will we achieve justice and equality for all.
Good stuff, right? We’re relieved. But then we noticed that one of the signatories on the letter was Lori Jean.
Who is Lori Jean? Lori Jean is a No-On-8 honcho who was one of the organizers at yesterday’s Los Angeles’ Mormon Temple protest. Apparently, Lori Jean made an announcement at the rally about her new website invalidateprop8.org which employs the following fundraising strategy:
Send a message to the Mormon Church, whose members raised more than $15 million to fund the deceitful advertising campaign for Proposition 8, the initiative that takes away the right to marry for same sex couples in California!
Make a donation, in the name of the president of the Mormon Church, to support the legal organizations working to invalidate Proposition 8 and to fund grass-roots activities in support of full marriage equality. For every donation of $5 or more, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center will send the following postcard to President Thomas Monson’s office in Salt Lake City, acknowledging your donation in his name….
…Let’s work to overturn Prop. 8 while sending a message to the Mormon Church that it’s wrong for any organization to exert political influence to deny the civil rights of any group!
How can Lori Jean sign today’s call-for-peace-and-unity letter and continue to raise funds by junk mailing the president of the LDS church?
We here at Johnny California sincerely hope that Lori Jean finds an alternate way to raise funds for the Invalidate 8 campaign, something that is in the spirit of the letter she signed today.

I think this web site is completely biased and is FULL SUPPORTER OF the yes on 8 campaign. Its obviously ran by religious or ignorant people and shouldn’t be a legitament news source. EQUALITY FOR ALL!

Geneva,
Indeed, equality for all!! We stand in solidarity with you.
We are No-On-8ers as we have said time and again all over this site. While our approaches may be different, we all need to work together.
And in the sprit of all working together, to prove that we stand with you, take a look at some of our earlier posts:
As you’ll see from before the election, we recommended a “No” On Prop 8 in our ballot prop explanations and recommendations: http://johnnycalifornia.com/?p=481
Before the election, we the time to debunk the Yes-On-8′s “education-in-schools” theory:
http://johnnycalifornia.com/?p=434
The Friday before the election, we analyzed the Field Poll and warned that the 5 point lead was not accurate and that work still needed to be done:
http://johnnycalifornia.com/?p=703
The day after the election we took the time to analyze the polls and figure out what where the campaign fell short (which we’re also currently doing for LA County: http://johnnycalifornia.com/?p=1114
We also chronicled the errors in the campaign and made suggestions as to what could be done differently:
